Privacy
Last updated October 15, 2026.
The short version: what you write in the Culturr app stays on your phone. If you save your climb, we also keep a locked copy that only your phones can open, so we can't read it. We keep as little as we can, we never sell or share it, and we don't track you across other sites.
The Grain, on culturr.com
When you take the Grain, we store your answers and scores under a random ID, with no name or account attached. If the link you arrived on had a short tag showing where you came from, we store that too. The link you share shows only your tool. Your full scores open only on the device that took the Grain, using a key kept in that browser.
If you give us your email, we store it, the date, and which result it belongs to. The first email sends your read and asks you to confirm you want the rest; nothing more is sent until you do. We count simple steps (a page view, a start, a share) so we can see what works. That is all.
We use your email only to send the Culturr experiment you signed up for and updates about it. Every email has a one tap way to stop. A stop takes you off every Culturr email, not just one list. You can also write to privacy@culturr.com to have your email deleted.
The app
Your check‑ins, sentences, chops and evening reviews are saved on your phone. Unless you save your climb, nothing you write is sent to us, and even then all we get is a copy we can't read.
To learn which parts of the app help people, the app sends anonymous counts: that a step happened on a given day, like opening the app, finishing a morning or closing a day. Each count carries a random number made on your phone, never your name, your words, your email or your device's advertising ID, and it is never linked to anything else about you. We keep counts for up to a year. You can turn them off in the app, in the menu at the top right of Today.
If you join a team, it sends numbers only for the last 30 days: whether you closed the day, how many chops you finished out of how many, your Altitude level, the reason you picked for a slip, and whether you said the day's swap. Never your words. Your team sees totals only, and only once three people have joined. Leaving the team deletes your numbers.
If you pair with a rep partner, the two of you share numbers only: your reps and days closed this week, growth hours kept against your target, your tier, your streak, the last day you logged, and your Grain style so they know how to cheer you. A nudge or a cheer is stored until your partner's app picks it up, then cleared. Leaving the pair deletes your numbers.
If you tie onto a rope, you join up to seven other people at your tier under a mountain name like Denali, never your real name, and the rope sees the same numbers a rep partner does. Cheers and nudges are the only way to reach each other; there is no messaging. Leaving the rope deletes your numbers and anything you sent.
If you pick a username, you join the leaderboards. Everyone with a username sees it next to your numbers: reps in the last 30 days, your daily average, days you've held S, your tier, and how long you've been climbing. Never your real name, and nothing you wrote. Your username can also stand in for your mountain name on your rope. Leaving the boards deletes your username and your numbers.
Saving your climb is optional. If you choose it, you sign in with Apple, with Google, or with your email. With Apple, we keep your Apple account ID, the name Apple shares the first time, and the email Apple gives us, which can be a private relay address. With Google, we keep your Google account ID, your name and your email, and nothing else from your Google account. With email, we keep your email address so we can sign you in: we send it a six digit code, keep the code only in a scrambled form for ten minutes, and use your address for nothing else. Either way we also keep your team, partner, rope and Grain keys, encrypted, so a new phone can pick up where you left off. Only a sign in with that same account gets them back. Apple, Google and email accounts stay separate, even when they share an email.
A saved climb also keeps a locked copy of what you write: your days, check‑ins, journal, weeks, months, aims and Seasons. Your phone locks it before it leaves, with a key kept only in your iCloud Keychain, which carries the key to your other phones. Culturr never gets that key, so we can't read what you write. We keep only the locked copy, its size and when it changed, and we hand it back only to a sign in with your account. Without iCloud Keychain, a new phone can't open it. Deleting your account in the app removes all of it.
Your calendar
If you connect your iPhone calendar, the app reads it on your phone to show how much of your week was time you chose, and adds your chops as blocks when you ask it to. It is never sent to us.
If you sign in with Google instead, your phone talks to Google directly. The app reads this week's events and adds your chops as blocks when you ask it to. The sign‑in stays in your phone's keychain, your calendar is never sent to Culturr, and you can sign out at any time in the app. Culturr's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Where it's kept, and for how long
Grain results, emails and the numbers above live in our database (Neon) and on the service that hosts this site (Vercel). To stop abuse, we count requests for a short time under a scrambled key, so no IP address or email sits in that count as itself. We keep Grain results and emails until you ask us to delete them, and team, partner and rope numbers until you leave. A saved climb stays until you delete your account.
What we never do
We never sell or share your information, and we don't use advertising cookies or trackers. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as your choice that nothing about you is ever sold, shared or tracked, which is already how Culturr works. If a request is unclear, we treat it as a stop.
Children
Culturr isn't meant for anyone under 18, and we don't knowingly keep information from children. If you think we have, write to us and we'll delete it.
