HANDLE.
Six steps for the moment you're in.
Name where you are, decide what you want, then say it in words that climb and take the first step.
Managing is general. Controlling is specific.
Handling is now.
Here
Where are you right now?
Name your level on Altitude, from Frozen to Present. Then say its sentence. A feeling you can name is a feeling you can work with.
I'm Restless. "I'm not overwhelmed. I'm impatient, because I care."
Lieberman et al., Psychological Science, 2007
Aim
What do you want?
Something you could point to. Clear, hard goals beat "do your best" goals.
I want one signed client this month.
Locke & Latham, American Psychologist, 2002
Number
How bad do you want it?
Pick a number from 1 to 10. A low number is an answer too. It tells you to aim somewhere else.
I'm at a 9.
Days
How long will you focus on this one thing?
Give it a number of days, and name what you'll say no to until then. Focus is what you stop doing.
I'll give it 30 days. Until then, I'm saying no to new side projects.
Language
Say it in words that climb.
This is where the moment turns. The feeling stays. The words change, and the words decide where you go next.
"I'll try to call them" becomes "I will call them."
Gross & John, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2003
Execute
Do it.
Take the first step today. Say when and where, and it's far more likely to happen.
I'll call the first name on the list before lunch.
Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006
Words that climb.
Language is the bridge from the feeling to the aim to the action. Same feeling. Different next move.
I'll try.I will.
I have to.I choose to.
I'm overwhelmed.I'm impatient, because I care.
This is unfair. This can be fixed. What exactly needs to change?
I'm tired.I'm tired, not finished.
Questions
- What is HANDLE?
- HANDLE is Culturr's six-step move for the moment you're in: Here, Aim, Number, Days, Language, Execute. Name where you are, decide what you want, then say it in words that climb and take the first step today.
- What does HANDLE stand for?
- Here: where are you right now? Aim: what do you want? Number: how bad do you want it, 1 to 10? Days: how long will you focus on this one thing? Language: say it in words that climb. Execute: take the first step today.
- Why does language matter so much?
- Language is the bridge. The feeling stays the same, but the words you use about it decide what you do next. "I'll try" leaves a door open. "I will" closes it behind you.
- How is HANDLE different from Altitude?
- Altitude tells you where you are. HANDLE moves you. Here is the first step of HANDLE, and it starts on Altitude.
- Where can I use it?
- Anywhere you're stuck: a deal, a hard talk, a day that got away from you. It takes about two minutes. Your grain result walks you through it.
- Is HANDLE a therapy method?
- No. HANDLE is Culturr's own framework, built on published research on goals, emotion and follow-through. It is not a diagnosis or a treatment.
4 minutes. Free. No account. HANDLE comes with your result.
